 Surfers and surf watchers are all the rage at Devils Punch Bowl State National Area, located seven miles north of Newport, Oregon. And there’s plenty to watch, especially during winter storms when waves slam with a deafening roar into a hollow rock formation shaped like a huge punch bowl. Many believe that the punch bowl was created by the collapse of the roof over two sea caves, which was then sculpted by wave action.  Five miles north of Newport, Oregon is Beverly Beach State Park. Travel the famed walkway that goes under the highway and you’ll come out on a long expanse of sandy beach that goes from Yaquina Head, where you can view the lighthouses, to the Otter Rock headlands.
