Fans of steelhead trout will want to make sure to visit the Siletz River. Located fewer than 20 miles north of Newport, Oregon on the north central Oregon coast, the Siletz River is the only body of water originating in the Coast Range Mountains that contains steelhead trout in the summer. During the winter months, it’s possible to catch a late-arriving summer steelhead as well as the familiar chrome bright winter fish. While the Pacific salmon dies after spawning, the steelhead is heartier and can move from freshwater to saltwater several times. Because of that versatility, a post-spawning steelhead may be able to be caught in March and April. For more information, visit http://gormanflyfishing.com/siletz_river_winter_steelhead.htm. A repository for both Chinook salmon and steelhead trout, the Alsea River is 27 miles southeast of Newport, Oregon in Tidewater. The Alsea River flows over 50 miles from its headwaters in the Coast Range Mountains northwest of Eugene to the sea at Waldport. Anglers will find Chinook salmon beginning to appear around mid-August. They tend to peak in September and October, petering out in November. As for steelhead trout, they are in abundance in the Alsea River from December through Marchy. For more information, visit http://www.trails.com/tcatalog_trail.aspx?trailid=FGW017-014. [Top]
